KUST held a series of activities to improve the ability of teachers and students to communicate internationally in a cross-cultural context and to help students achieve success in going to the United Nations and international organizations for work and internships. On May 26th, KUST invited WANG Jiyuan to give a special lecture on how to become an employee of UN organizations. WANG is the first secretary of the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG), the Deputy Director of International Labour Organization (ILO) in Beijing and the Deputy Representative of ILO in China, the Deputy Director of ILO in East Asia, the Representative of ILO in Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, as well as the Executive Director of the United Nations Association of China. More than 100 undergraduate and graduate students from 24 faculties attended the online meeting.
WANG introduced the system for international civil servants in the UN, different types of positions, requirements and standards for candidates, as well as the selection procedure. He utilized case studies to demonstrate the key points of recruitment and the requirements for an international civil servant. In addition, he also elaborated on the preparations for participating in an internship at the United Nations and international organizations as well as which matters to pay particular attention to during an interview. After the lecture, he interacted with students and answered questions from students majoring in architecture, environmental science and engineering, medicine, foreign languages, and computer science.
The lecture enabled students to fully understand the international civil service system, accurately understand the mission of international civil servants, and improve their ability to compete for jobs in international organizations.
