On December 12th, Phouth Simmalavong, Minister of Education and Sports of Laos, sent a letter to congratulate the establishment of China-South and Southeast Asian College Students Goodwill Games Network initiated by KUST. The minister hoped that the “Network” will strengthen exchanges between China, and South and Southeast Asian countries through sports games, especially the exchanges in education, sports and culture between Laos and China, so as to cultivate more Sino-Lao goodwill messengers, and continuously promote Sino-Lao relations to a new level.

The congratulatory letter from the Minister of Education and Sports of Laos is a recognition of KUST’s contribution in serving the South and Southeast Asian countries (six countries in the Lancang-Mekong region include, namely China, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia) in the fields of culture, education, etc. With the national strategies as its guide for action, KUST has been actively practising the neighborhood policy of amity; sincerity; mutual benefit and inclusiveness. By giving full play to its own advantages in education and scientific research, KUST has carried out a series of cooperative initiatives with the countries in the Lancang-Mekong region (South and Southeast Asian countries).
In 2015, KUST held the first Lancang-Mekong College Students Goodwill Games and Kunming Cultural and Sports Week for College Students from South and Southeast Asian Countries. By 2019, the event had been successfully held for five years and attracted nearly 3,000 participants, including students and teachers from more than 30 universities in 12 countries in South and Southeast Asia, as well as representatives from universities in the five countries of the Lancang-Mekong region. At present, the Lancang-Mekong College Students Goodwill Games and Kunming Cultural and Sports Week for College Students from South and Southeast Asian Countries has developed from a nascent event to a mature platform for regional youth cultural and sports cooperation. It has also enriched the form of youth exchange and cooperation in the Mekong region and other South and Southeast Asian countries. It is believed that with a series of cultural and sports activities to be carried out by the “Network” in the future, the cultural and sports exchanges and cooperation between young students from China and South and Southeast Asia will make more progress, and the interactions and integration in the fields of sports, culture, language, science and technology will burst into bloom and achieve more fruitful results.
