On May 23rd, invited by the International Joint Laboratory of Green Construction and Intelligent Operation and Maintenance of Yunnan Province, Kenneth Grattan, Peter Robery, and P. A. Muhammed Basheer, academicians of the Royal Academy of Engineering, visited the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Mechanics at KUST. They gave academic reports as a part of 'the Zhixing Lecture' organized by the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Mechanics. Teachers and students of relevant majors from the faculty attended the lecture for exchanges and learning.

Firstly, Professor Kenneth Grattan's presentation delved into the pivotal technical challenges and solutions for the application of optical fiber sensors in Structural Health Monitoring. Secondly, Professor Peter Robery expounded on the mechanisms underlying the durability and degradation of concrete materials and discussed the evolutionary trends in the theory and technology for extending the lifespan of concrete materials, incorporating current globally-advocated green, low-carbon, and energy conservation technologies. Finally, Professor P. A. Muhammed Basheer dissected the advancements in concrete carbon sequestration technology, offering insights into the green and low-carbon development of related technologies in the civil engineering sector.
The reports are highly insightful and have offered profound guidance for engineering practice, which have significantly broadened the academic horizons and enhanced the theoretical foundation of the participants. Engaging in meaningful exchanges with the academicians, attendees actively participated in the discussions and all concurred that the academic reports have enriched their theoretical knowledge and practical engineering skills, laying a solid foundation for their future development.
The three distinguished academicians stated that the current exchange has significantly enhanced their comprehension of KUST, hoping to forge deeper collaborations for future growth. Furthermore, a preliminary consensus on specific areas of cooperation was reached.
