Recently, the research findings by the research group of Professor Xia Xueshan of KUST along with Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, were published in the top medical journal Phytomedicine. The research article is entitled Broad Antiviral and Anti-inflammatory Activity of Qingwenjiere Mixture (QJM) Against SARS-CoV-2 and Other Human Coronavirus Infections. KUST is the institution of the first author while Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Diseases of Guangzhou Medical University also participated in the research work.
Xie Peifang, a master’s student, and Fang Yue, a doctoral student, both from the Faculty of Life Science and Technology at KUST, are co-first authors, while Dong Shuwei, Wen Weibo and Xia Xueshan are co-correspondents. The research was supported by the National Key Research and Development Plan, the Major Special Project of Yunnan Science and Technology Department and the Key R&D Project of Yunnan Science and Technology Department.
QJM (Product with code numberZ2020006A approved bytheMedical Products Administration of Yunnan Province) is an in-hospital preparation of an anti-pandemic traditional Chinese medicine compound developed by Wen Weibo, Dean of the First Affiliated Hospital of Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine). Since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020,QJM has shown remarkable clinical efficacy against COVID-19 and the common cold. In the study, the chemicalcompositionsfromQJM were analyzed. The conclusion is that QJM has broad anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties that work against SARS-CoV-2 and three common coronaviruses (HCoV-0C43, HCoV-229E and HCoV-NL63) at the cellular level by interfering with the activation of the NF-κB/MAPK pathways. This study not only helps us to further understand the antiviral mechanism of drugs, but also provides candidate drugs for the prevention and treatment of new infectious diseases.
