On the morning of March 23rd, the unveiling ceremony of Yunnan Liquid Metal Industry Innovation Institute and the Liquid Metal Industry Development Forum was held in the C.C.Wu Hall of KUST on the Lianhua Campus. The event was organized by KUST and Yunnan Zhongxuan Liquid Metal Technology Co., Ltd., and co-organized by Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Yunnan Kewei Liquid Metal R&D Co., Ltd. and KUST Science Park Co., Ltd..

This event was attended by CHEN Zhonggeng (Deputy Director-General of the Department of Industry and Information Technology of Yunnan Province), WANG Hua (President of KUST), HOU Shuqian (President of Yunnan Provincial Academy of Science and Technology), GU Chaoling (Deputy Mayor of the People's Government of Qujing), XV Shaofa (Deputy Secretary of CPC Xuanwei Municipal Committee), YANG Yingbao (Chairman of Yunnan Zhongxuan Liquid Metal Technology Co., Ltd.), and LIU Jing (Professor of the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, CAS and Chief Scientist of Yunnan Zhongxuan Liquid Metal Technology Co., Ltd). GAN Yong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, attended this event online. Vice President MA Wenhui chaired the seminar.

GAN Yong said in his speech that Yunnan Province has rich non-ferrous metal resources, but in the past, the industry mainly focused on the primary processing of raw materials, and the industrial chain was not developed enough. The comprehensive utilization of liquid metal materials can greatly extend the industrial chain of non-ferrous metals. He hoped that Yunnan Liquid Metal Industry Innovation Institute would draw up plans and find the best way to provide key support to the innovation and development of liquid metal industry. GAN also suggested that the institute should integrate local resources of universities, research institutions and industries to accelerate the cultivation and development of new liquid metal industry. He advocated that experts should play their roles in resolving the existing difficulties and limitations of the industry, especially in breaking through the bottleneck of core technologies and developing disruptive technologies, so as to provide a guarantee for the sustainable development of the liquid metal industry.

WANG Hua said that the establishment of the institute is a landmark event. Based on the industrial and research foundation of Zhongxuan Company and related enterprises, KUST will take advantage of its multiple disciplinary platforms, talents, research and development, and make the institute an interdisciplinary and open-ended one with a high starting point. The institute will play a positive role in building China into a world powerhouse of science and technology and carrying out the “Three Cards” policy (green energy, green food and the destination for healthy living???) of Yunnan province. It will improve the research and development of liquid metal technologies, accelerate the industrialization process of liquid metals, and promote the construction of a strategic emerging industry cluster base of liquid metals in Yunnan Province.

The “Cooperation Agreement of Co-building Yunnan Liquid Metal Industry Innovation Institute” was then signed between KUST and Yunnan Zhongxuan Liquid Metal Technology Co., Ltd.. The participants layed hands on the crystal ball together, marking the official establishment of Yunnan Liquid Metal Industry Innovation Institute.

In the Liquid Metal Industry Development Forum, five experts, namely LIU Jing, MA Wenhui, DENG Zhongshan, HU Jin, and SONG Dongming, delivered academic reports on "The Macro Development of Liquid Metal Industry", "Collaborative Innovation of Liquid Metal and Photovoltaic Industry", "The Development of Liquid Metal Technology", "Technological Breakthrough in Liquid Metal " and "Ideas on the Innovative Development of Liquid Metal Industry”.

Yunnan Liquid Metal Industry Innovation Institute is supervised by the Department of Industry and Information Technology of Yunnan Province, led by KUST and Yunnan Zhongxuan Liquid Metal Co., Ltd., jointly established by Yunnan Tin Group (Holding) Co., Ltd., Yunnan Sino-Precious Metals Holding Co., Ltd., Yunnan Lincang Xinyuan Germanium Co., Ltd., Beijing Jurui Zhongbang Science and Technology Co., Ltd. (Mige Lab), and Analytic & Testing Research Center of Yunnan. And is supported by downstream enterprises such as Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., Tongwei Solar Co., Ltd. (Anhui Province) and Elematec International Trading (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd.. The primary goals of the institute are to consolidate the first-mover advantage of the liquid metal industry in Yunnan Province while responding to the domestic and international competition, to build a world-class R&D and experimental base for frontier science and key technology of liquid metals, to form a national open platform shared by enterprises, universities, research institutes and end-users, to build an integrated development system of scientific research, engineering technology and industry clusters, and to cultivate outstanding scientific and industrial talents in this field. It will strive to win the support from national innovation platforms, to enhance the comprehensive competitiveness and leading ability of Yunnan province in this field, and to contribute to the high-quality development of the liquid metal industry.
